Aside from age, is there any way to tell if a pan is lead soldered from just looking at it? Such as the differences in the joint? Does anybody have any images of lead soldered pan joint just to see what one looks like? I'm asking this as I was wondering what sort of indications their are for someone looking to buy a used evaporator.

Not really distinguishable by simply looking at the pans. Leader Evaporator Co. phased out lead in 1991 I believe. The other major manufacturers stopped using lead solder in 1994.

The best way would be to buy a cheap lead-test swab kit at a hardware store. http://leadcheck.com/ (note that this is an example of one type of product and doesn't represent an endorsement of this over another lead-swab test). For about $10 you can know for certain.

Another thing is most manufactuers began labeling soldered pans as lead free (when they swithced )during that time frame that Dr Perkins refers to. And also look for a pan label with the date of manufactuer on it. If it has a date on it call them it may save you the cost of a kit.
