Does anyone know of a wood-fired unit that is good for small-scale boiling, and can also be used for space-heating during the winter? I boil in my detached garage with the doors wide open. That works fine, but I need to also be able to heat the place to work in sometimes. (I’ve been using an old Jotul wood stove whose top comes off. I just take it off & put a pan on it for boiling; then remove the pan & replace the top the rest of the year. Unfortunately, it’s very old and starting to crack.) I imagine that if I tried using a regular evaporator this way (with no liquid in the pan), it might warp, etc.?

Thanks for any ideas!

Look at the Vogelzang boxwood stoves marketed by Home depot, Northern Tool, and Ace Hardware. They have burner tops that can be removed, so you can expose your pots or flat pans directly to the fire.

Thanks Cedar Eater. I'm hoping to find something with a little bigger top surface area to heat a bigger pan than those--

One model is bigger that the other, but yeah they are small. If you pull both burner covers off, the divider between them also comes out. So the larger model would do okay on a full size steam table pan, but if I see something bigger, I'll let you know.

With this one (https://www.acwholesalers.com/US-Stove-Company/1261-Small-Cast-Iron-Wood-Stove-Heater-900-Sq-Ft/48486.ac?gclid=Cj0KEQjw_9OoBRChj9vMo5CHrdUBEiQAJ6Y RPZGFJZaV9ZBlCupEB5geCCdgYlEM26mkT1xY4JooUKQaAqJU8 P8HAQ#), at least the whole top comes off. There are pics from different angles. It looks like maybe a steam table pan will sit right in.

I'm sorry if I'm missing something Cedar Eater--Was there supposed to be an attachment or link with your last message?

Right where it says "this one" is a link. The text should be a different color.

I've been thinking the same thing. How to heat the shack while out working trying to prep for the season. I have a leader half pint evaporator. My plan is to get a plate of steel to put in place of the pan. Keep the gasket in place to seal the plate. I think that would work well. Of course I havent done it yet so it's still a pipe dream at this point. The half pint is about 24x33".
