Ha Ha I can laugh about it because I had 100 gallons froze up. The good side, I got about 20 gallons from it of about 6% sugar. The rest I used an axe to get it out of the barrel and try again. I even made a wooden sled, hauled it into the basement and put a space heater next to it for 16 hrs. No luck.

If it sits too long, it can spoil your new sap. Microbes will grow even in the ice.

I bought an Allied Precision 1000w bucket heater from Tractor Supply. We are on the Tug Hill and get 40 degree days with negatives at night sometimes and everything freezes. The bucket heater melt the ice very quickly and works even faster if you have some unfrozen sap that can be dumped in with it.

remember that warm rises and cool settles...on a warm day a fan blowing to circulate air will do a slow thaw but a tank heater will work quickest. A small torch can be used to get a small pool to set it in as it will not run when tank is dry to protect the tank. They do work fairly quickly.

These are livestock tank heaters and come in many sizes and designs. if you had a metal bucket you could set the heater in a bucket of water and set on the ice to thaw a pool spot.

Good luck!
