View Full Version : Will sulphurous water affect sap?

Hey all, this year in addition to tapping my own trees, I am also tapping a friend's virgin microbush - 3 trees with only 2 taps apiece. Great output so far from them, so no concerns there! But as I make sap into nearup, and store it in a glass jar, there is a thin semi-opaque white film inside the jar once I pour out the sap. Baking soda and vinegar, chased with hot water and wiping out with paper towel, get rid of it easily enough.

There is lots of hard water in the area, which we both have. Then I remembered that my friend's got sulphur in her water. Haven't noticed the telltale rotten-egg smell associated with sulphur, but only been making nearup so far. I haven't noticed anything amiss while boiling sap to nearup, but don't want any nasty surprises when I get closer to syrup.

Anyone here have a bush where there is also sulphurous groundwater?

As I tap exclusively in the Village, I have trees with all sorts of potential problems, from road salt, to oily driveways, to fallen down buildings, and to dog pens with deep doo-doo. None of these have given me any problem, and I uess my thinking is that the tree serves as a giant filter, with the excess nutrients, toxins, and minerals becoming a permanent part of the wood. I know from experience with lumber that cherry wood from different soil types is a different color, for instance.
Sulfur is one to think about though, as it can be smelled and tasted in amounts of only a few parts per billion. I'm guessing your friend's water comes from further down than the maple roots.
