In a pinch this past weekend I used my garden hose to move sap from a collection tank to my truck because I could not get to the collection tank by truck I needed the extra length of hose. I boiled 200 gallons of sap and now the sweet in the pans have a bad plastic taste. I dumped the remaining sap but am thinking that I should dump the sweet and start over fresh. What do you think? I do not want to ruin the whole seasons syrup by mixing it in. Thaankss

Yes, dump it and clean the pans, pump and anything else that came in contact with the sap that was off flavor. It's amazing how something like the wrong hose or container will ruin the day. Chalk it up to experience now ;)

That is what I am thinking too, learning the hard way sucks! I will dump it. Thanks for the advice!

Unless it was a clean white potable water hose, it will give an off flavor. If you need to use a hose, it must be the white ones commonly sold to connect camping trailers to water. Common hoses are not meant for even incidental contact with food or potable water.

The point (and the problem) of sugaring is that it's a concentrating process.
The 2% sugar becomes 66% and anything else (off-tastes, chemicals, soaps (never use them), and (and in the old days, lead)) become concentrated as well.
It helps to be a little OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) through all steps of the process.... :D

what type of tank are you using, ive see and heard of people using the plastic storage totes that aren't FG and there sap and syrup had a funny taste the longer it sits the more it leaches into the sap even hanging buckets ect I know its not the right hose but im not positive that it would pickup such a bad taste just from pumping thru it quick, I would look at other aspects of your operation just to be sure
