I have a deer run (rays) Ro..is it possible with extremely cold SAP is the reason for only doubling sugar on one pass?(2.1-4.3%)on one pass..last year I did 2-7%with ease..I could sqeeze further to 2.1-5.9% but the flow rate goes from 250p/hr to about 160 gal.per . Hr...

Most of the sap I ran thru mine this year was 32 degrees. I say that because the tanks had ice in it. With my 500 I usually got 5 to 5+ permeate and 3 gpm concentrate. I am happy with that because that wasremoving 300+ gph permeate. I run mine about 350 psi first pass and 325 recirculating. I get about 2.5 gpm permeate when recirculating and have no problem taking it to 12%. Ray recommends running it at 375 psi but I don't need to push it.

My 250,is not to exceed 295psi.I run it about 265-270psi.At that i get 3permate and 2 concentrate. This years first run I could only get 3.6-4% sap from 2.1% raw...

On our 250 this year (second year with it), we were going from 1.7% sap to 7.4% without any recirculation. Air/sap temperature was around 36 degrees. This is the same as last year when we went from 2.0 % sap to 8.0 %.

Appears the 125, 250 and 375 units will go lot higher initial pass vs the 500 and bigger units from talking with Ray and other producers. The smaller membranes are easier to squeeze through as they are 4" NF 270's and the 500 and bigger have the 8" XLE440's.

I wish I could say the same, the only difference this year is that the top on the membrane housing is on the oppiste sides.I don't think it would make a difference.

Just note that the nf will flow faster than the xle... but it will pass sugar when pushed too hard or too high of sugar %.

First year on deer run hobby 125, great unit! I too went from 2% to 4% in one pass. Just curious if that is normal or if it can do better? My sap was cold, also running pressure around 265psi. Flow rate was about 90 gal/hr instead of 125 gal / hr.

Last night was our second night working our new 250 gph Deer Run RO. There was ice floating in the sap tank and by the end of the evening temps had fallen into the 20's. We still have plenty to learn but we were going from 2.5 to over 6% with 1 pass, running the PSI at 250 and yielding 2 +/- gpm for both permeate and concentrate. Without the RO we would have staggered to bed late with sap still in the tank. With the RO we were done and cleaned up by 10 PM. After making syrup for 25 years I am a little in awe.

I did a search For the infamous deer run ro's and didn't find specs or purchase info.
Please point me in the right direction for more information about these.

I run my 250 at 1gpm concentrate and 2.5 permeate at 275psi. I haven't seen anything higher this year than 2.5 Sap. At that setting I'm going from 2.0-2.5 to 7-10%.

You won't likely find much on specs for a Deer Run RO, (Ray Gingerich), Ray is Amish and thus doesn't have a web presence. The only way to get them, is to call Ray (he does have a phone in his shop with attached sugarhouse, 440-422-3047).

Does anyone know what he uses for membranes? Also what approximately does his 125 cost?

Mark,

Everyone is in awe after their first R.O. run. I know I was. And then imediately following the "awe" moment the disgust started- disgusted with myself that I had not considered an RO earlier in life!

He uses Dow Filmtec membranes. Smaller units have 4" membranes and are NF 270 and 500gph and above units are XLE 440 8" membranes.

Thanks Dave!
I called Ray this morning at 8am and he returned my call about and hour later. He is sending me information and pricing for the electric 125 which is expandable to 250 and price for a 250. Electric motors are 240 volt only so it looks like I will be running a new line to the sugar house which is an overdue project anyhow.
Lead time he prefers to say is about a month although he also said he can build a 125 in a day.
