Ive heard people talking about low sugar in their sap this year. I tested a test tap I have out and was barely 1% on a tree that gave me 3% to start last year. I'm pretty sure things are still frozen pretty tight as in the 200 taps I put out today and yesturday maybe a half a dozen in full sun even dripped. Anyone getting good sap yet or is everyone getting low numbers?

My 1st boil was Wed night. 1% sugar and I wish we had dumped the 200+ gal instead. Went through a lot of wood for 2 gal of syrup. My partner just said he tested today before he collected and up to 2.5% now. Whew...

That's what I got was 1%, when I have always been right at 1.7%. Boiled for 13 hours into late last night to get 3 1/2 gallons. I filtered it today, and it is just at the dark range. Yes, a long day, and a lot of wood, but the syrup is very tasty.

On the other side of the Mississippi, I've been getting an average so far of 3%. Flow is slow yet.

Looks like everyone's content is starting to rise. Hopefully things. Will loosen up around here and I will find out for myself. At the end of last year I was running sap through my RO twice to get 2 percent I think I would dump it this year instead of wasting power and wood running 10% sap spoils you over time.

Boiled 4 day old sap today...first boil and it was at 1.8ish. Collected 40 gallons today at 2.5%.

A few days ago our overall sap was at 1.7 percent. That was disappointing, but it is what it is. Yesterday, the overall sap was 2.6 percent. Never had a rise like that in such a short time. Boiled a significantly shorter time too, that was nice. I know ups and downs occur during the season, but are others experiencing variations like this too? Checked and zero'd the refractometer just to be certain!
take care, Mark

Started at 1.1 then up to 1.5 then up to 2.2 and today back down to 1.7. I've never seen sugar below 2 ever before this year. I usually average around 3 or a little over.

I havent gotten far enough into thereby yet to measure. Plan on being in a new location next year. But I know my first 4 gallons made me a pint of syrup.

My sugar maples are currently at 2.5% and 3%. My silvers are at 2.5% and 3.0%. Freeman maple is at 2%. Norway maples at 2.5% and 3.5%. (I haven't tapped the Manitoba maples yet because I don't think I could keep up with the sap.) A vast improvement from 1.5% across the board at the start of my season.

I'm only a hobbyist making syrup for myself and a few friends and family so in the past I just tapped any Sugar Maple I came to and boiled. This year I invested in a refractometer and discovered that I have become very picky about what trees I decide to leave my spiles in. My neighbor has 3 yard trees all Sugar Maple that have consistently yielding 3.5 , 4,and 6% which is a whole lot better than 2% that the trees I use to use are. Unfortunately the 6% tree produces the least but its still 1/3 the boiling.

Still holding a steady average of 3% on pipeline, 4% on buckets. The north facing buckets, smaller trees, and any with snow still around the base have yet to run. On our 8 th? boil of the season, still making light syrup.
