Fiberglass?

Can everyday pink household fiberglass be used to fill some small leaks and voids in an arch? Or will it burn?

I have never tried to set on fire but I think it will melt. Take a small piece out in the driveway and put the torch to it that will anwseryour question in a heart beat.

Thats all I ever used for my pan gaskets. It will melt and turn into a ball of glass if layed directly in the fire especially if the arch has forecd draft. Normally just the color would burn out of it.

I don't know how hot it will get in an oil fired arch but in a wood fired arch it melts in the firebox area. On the other side of the baffle under the flue pan it works ok.

I am going to give it a shot. The small gap that I need ti fill is on the very back edge beyond the smoke stack where some plate steel was wielded to the frame of the arch. Or I may cram some left over flat pan gasket in there.

We use high temperature RTV caulking in places like that on some arch's, it just depends on how hot it gets, It does sound like that it will work there, but the household insulation should to.

Yes I had a spot just like that on my 2 x 6 and stuffed it with fiberglass last season and it never bothered it. But i used the arch with that gap for 8 seasons pior to last year and just left the gap.

I use fiberglass to pack around the bottom of pans, especially when the
frost starts to come out and everything shifts. It doesn't really burn ,but
as Tapper said, discolours and blackens.But it is cheap and easy to find.
Frost will be under it good this year, has been really cold the past few
weeks , -0 degrees F .

Lots of frost now, for sure. Very cold and next to zero snow cover.

Speaking of frost those that don't have good footings under their arch may want to put the level on the arch before putting the fire to it this year.

I had wedges under each corner of my 2x6 so I could adjust it as the season went on.

If you want some snow cover come get the extra in the road to my sugarhouse, we have had over 3' in the last week. Not too far north west of me in Oswego county they have had 100"+ in the same period. My woods have about 18" settled right now, makes it harder to get around but the trees like it better.

maple flats, do you know any producers up that way?

I'd have to think any maple producer in that area is pretty much screwed with the snow, and any sort of tubing they got in the woods will be buried till June.

That is really terrible for those people up there, just anyone, not to mention the maple producers.

Just 1 rainy day and that 100" with compact to about 18 to 24 inches as it is likely the lighter stuff if it is lake effect and not the heavy wet stuff. They said on Yahoo tonight that they got over 11 feet in the last week.

Brandon,,,,,,,,,, The 11 feet is unoffical but they did get 10 for sure. Redfield NY is still waiting on verification of the 11 feet.
