Ok, so this is my first year tapping, and I am having issues trying to ID my trees. I am almost positive they had maple leaves - but they don't show the staggered branch/bud arrangement. Maybe I don't understand what that means?

Tree 1:

This tree has obvious maple leaves, but does not have the staggered branch arrangement as you can see. It is also very dry so far - it has three main trunks that are each about 20" in diameter. About 3 quarts in a week.

Tree 2:

This tree is very dry still as well, about 1 quart in a week.

Tree 3:

This tree is the workhorse with about 2.5 gallons so far in a week. The sap is very sweet tasting. Still no staggered buds.

Tree 4:

This was purchased as a sugar maple - doesn't have staggered buds. (immature - not tapped)

Any help would be appreciated

Maples are not staggered they are opposing, one twig directly across from another as seen in your first pic.

Well that makes more sense. I had that mixed up. Thank you for the info.

#3 is a norway maple . I'm having problems with the other pics, seem a little blury and makes twigs look thicker than it should. get some pics of the bark

They both look like sugar maples to me. No. 1 coarser bark like older maples have. No. 2 a smoother bark like younger sugar maples have.
