Down to the wire on new shack

In April of 2104 I found this barn before the excavator got to it to knock it down and burn it so that the owner could put up a new Morton building in its place. When I found it the owner told me I could have it, but I had 10 days to get it down and out of there. I took it apart and moved the pieces to my place and stored them. In November I got my floor poured and starting putting it back together. Trying to get the evaporator setup this weekend. The main frame is 20X30. The lean-to is 10X20 giving us a 20X40 building with 11 ft. eaves.

That is a GREAT looking building, oozing with character and charm. Perfect for a syrup boiling place.
Most of the credit is due you for your ambition and effort, but a small part of this is just plain LUCK.

I love it. I stupidly started building a new arch and new sugar shack at the same time. My shack materials are buried in snow so that's looking bad for this year but with the super cold I'll be able to get the evaporator done. I'm super jealous of your building, what a great find.

Thanks guys. I almost passed on it as I looked at the time frame and all the work needed to save it. I'm sure glad I pursued it against my wife's liking at the time. She is glad now also. I've dated the barn to around the 1870's.

That building is beautiful. You sure must have a lot of ambition. I used to but it got up and left. I wanted to build a post and frame shack but ended up doing conventional framing cause it was faster and easier. Can't always get what you want, but we are inside when we boil. Hope to see more pics when you boil.

Thanks Terry. Here are some pics of my mortise and tennon jig. The sidewalls were originally 16 feet tall. I cut them down to 9 feet and put the frame on a 2 foot knee wall. I made a jig to hold my chainsaw, and put it on a hydraulic table. This is how I put the tennons back on the posts after I cut them down. Before everyone blasts me for that, I did do some hand mortises on 2 replacement posts. Pounding them out by hand was a good feeling knowing that over 120 years ago someone was doing this the same way.

As a timber framer, I have to thank you for repurposing that beautiful old dutch barn as a sugar shack. Too many of our historic hand made structures are not given such a chance to live again. I don't want to imagine that it would have gone the way of the wrecking ball otherwise. Here in the east, there are a number of framers that specialize in just this type of work, and the Timber Framers Guild quite regularly focuses educational programs on such historic structures.

Make lots of great syrup in your "new" building.

Thanks Ghs57. For a long time I have dreamed of taking one down and putting it back up at my place. Before I moved to where I am now, I took a 30X40 down with the intentions of putting it back up. I had it stored outside under tarps for about 2 years. By the time I was ready to put it back up the tarps had leaked and rotted the beams because they could never dry out. That was a lesson learned...be ready to re-assemble soon after you take one down, or have a building big enough to store them in until you are ready. This one only had 2 really long beams (30'), so I was able to store all of them in my pole barn.

Nice Job on the repurposing of that old Barn. We had A 40x80 post & beam barn when I was A kid , Daylight basement on 2 sides & 2 levels in the loft for Hay. 4 floors total. Man could you put some Hay in that barn. I watched a guy take it down piece by piece a few years ago. Always wonder where it may have ended up. You see them in every state falling apart. Nice to see one more saved

Lots of people were pulling off to the side of the road when they seen me coming. It was one of the more interesting moves that we have made.

Getting some more finished up on the shack. I found these 1920's tri-fold carriage doors before they went in the dumpster. The door on the left is a walk in door. Inside there is a latch and all three slide to one side. The opening on the right has two 2-way swinging doors so that my vintage litter carrier will be able to push in or out without having to open a door.
