My son and I tapped our 20 trees today. The trees are in a somewhat shady valley. There is still 2+ feet of snow on the ground today. Not a drop flowed from a single tree while we worked, but I'm hopeful for Wed. Tapped today based on the forecast for wed., sat., and sun. Today was the best day for me to get out this week. Looks like it would be good to be in for this weekend.

We learned a few things today:

1. $49 snowshoes from Ocean State Job Lot are useful, and worth the $49.

2. Snowshoes don't have effective reverse.

3. Its really hard to close the door to the sugar house behind you while wearing snow shoes.

can you post picture of your sugar shack? I was looking to make one about that size. Thanks and have a good season. Kevin

My lesson on 49 dollar job lot snowshoes wasnt learned til i bought 59 dollar Redfeather made in usa snowshoes online. They are way better bindings and easier to use

LL Beans snowshoes are great. A bit more but guaranteed for life and well manufactured.

A few drops today from a few trees. I think tomorrow will bring the first run for me.

1.25 gallons of sap today. Most of it from three trees. Most of my trees have not yet given up a drop. Getting a little worried, but it sounds like most of us are still waiting for that first run.

I'm in the same boat.
28 taps and only 16 gal since Sat.
Trees are in a valley as well. Some are giving a gal/day
and others hardly a cup. Driving me crazy. Maybe the snow? Hoping tonight's rain gets the trees going.

20 taps, and collected 4 gallons last night around 8 pm. one tree had half of that total. That was total since tapping last weekend. No freeze last night, Checked a couple and very little more this morning.
tonight supposed to go down just below freezing. Still don't understand how that helps, or if today's even warmer weather in the 50's helps or not. I suppose I need to check all of them tonight.

Hate to tell you. But still not great. Only 6g and that came from 10 of my 28 taps. Go figure

A little progress today. 2.75 gallons from our 20 taps. Our best run so far this season. Last year the same trees gave me a 20 gallon day and a few 10 gallon days.

Trees blew open today. You should have had a good run. Even my hillside trees produced today.
