I was just wondering if you can use cementboard in the arch for a year without it breaking down? It would only be in the arch the firebox is lined with fire brick. Just trying to save a couple dollars this year. Second year cooking and a lot of stuff to buy.

My second year in the downward spiral of bigger and better, i lined a barrel with cement board, the 1/2" by 3'x5' from Home Depot, and it held up okay. You could easily see on the outside of the barrel where the board ended, so it was doing something. It took a beating, but I suspect I could have gotten a second season out of it; however, by then I had built a new insulated and fire bricked arch. Hope that helps.

It is certainly an expensive little hobby to get into! Good luck with the arch board. It is better than having nothing in the arch haha.

I don't think the cement board will last. I use it as a separator between my rear pan and the stack, and it cracks really easily.

my whole arch is lined with cement board and then covered with brick. It has been that way for 12 years now and no problems

I concur with maple maniac65. I've used Hardie backer on 2 evaporators, and it's worked out fine. As long as you have insulation and firebrick, it will last.

There's a seller on eBay . Last year I bought a big roll of ceramic blanket for $160 . I have a 2x5 evap and there's enough to line it three times if you wanted to. Well worth it. I lined the whole arch then firebricked over it .
