I hope this is not a pie that has been posted recently, I was browsing online and came across it.
Looks easy enough and I will try it this year. Between me and the kids, someone will enjoy it !!

If anyone tries this, please let us know how it is. Or, if you have tried it before.

Thank-you.

Well it's Pi day, so I have one of these beauties in the oven right now. I'll check back later with a taste review.

Anyone else have a favorite pie recipe you wanted to share on this special day?

I made one a couple of weeks ago; first time. My wife and I agreed that it was very sweet/rich and that responsible people like us would stay away from such a dish. It was gone in a day! Thanks to those folks from Quebec Province that perfected this treat! Simply put - it is finest kind.

Well, I couldn't get my boys to wait until 9:26, so we tried it after dinner. It was very rich, but not as sweet as I thought it would be. I think the condensed milk taste came through a little more than I had hoped. My wife, my mother and I all really liked it, but my five year olds said it was too sweet. Crazy, right?

My wife had or has a maple syrup pie reciepe and she used 1/3 cup of cold black coffee in it. We believe that the coffee took out some of the super super sweetness yet had the real maple taste, it was a real gooood pie. She is trying to find the reciepe in one of her many cook books.

Years ago I had an incredible maple syrup pie at Owl Hoot Farm in Stanbridge East. I had never heard of such a thing and was skeptical but it was love at first bite. Unfortunately it was a secret family recipe so I was left to search out my own. When I started looking I was surprised to find that most of them used brown suger and some, (gag!) evaporated milk. I knew I did not want either in my pie. This year for Thanksgiving I finally found one I liked it came out great. I used regular raw cream I skimmed off my milk. If I bought it I would use heavy cream to avoid the additives in whipping cream.

Ingredients

For the All-Butter Pie Crust:
1 1/4 cup unbleached white or spelt flour
1 stick (1/2 cup) cold butter
1/4 tsp. salt
About 3 to 5 Tbsp. ice water
For the Maple Pie Filling:
1 1/2 cups pure maple syrup
6 Tbsp. butter
1/2 cup whipping (35%) cream
1 Tbsp unbleached white flour
1/4 tsp salt
2 eggs

Directions

Cube the cold butter into small pieces and then incorporate it into the flour and salt, using a pastry blender or a food processor, until it is the size of tiny peas. Add the ice cold water, a tablespoon at a time and mix until the dough comes into a ball. Be careful not over-handle the dough which will result in a tough pie crust. Flatten the ball of dough into a disc, wrap in parchment paper or plastic and let it rest in the refrigerator for about an hour.
In a heavy saucepan over medium heat, bring the maple syrup just to a boil. Cook the maple syrup at a gentle bubble, reducing the heat if necessary, for 5 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the butter until melted. Add the cream and stir. Transfer about 1/2-cup of the mixture to a small bowl; whisk in the flour and salt and then whisk this back into the mixture in the saucepan. Beat the eggs in a small bowl and then whisk them into the mixture in the saucepan. Mix together briefly, until the consistency is smooth and even.
Roll out the pie dough and place it in a 9-inch pie plate. Pour the warm filling into the pie shell. Bake it in a preheated 350ºF oven, on a rack positioned in the middle of the oven, for about 50 to 60 minutes or until the centre is golden brown and bubbly, and relatively firm when lightly jiggled back and forth (it will be a bit wobbly and that's ok).
The pie should ideally be allowed to cool completely before slicing, a minimum of 1 to 2 hours.

Yield: 1 pie

This past Christmas I went to my friend's place for their family get-together. When I told my friend that I planned to bring two maple syrup pies, he said to bring just one, maple syrup pie wasn't a family tradition and would probably go uneaten. So I made just one, basically identical to the one here (only I cheat, I buy the piecrust...quel horreur!)

Well, come dessert time, there are all these other storebought pies - apple, cherry, pumpkin...and guess which pie vanished in 5 minutes flat? Mine!! Of all the other 4-5 pies, at least two went untouched and unenthusiastic inroads were made into one of the apple and pumpkin pies. Mostly cause there was no more maple syrup pie left!!

So now I'm pretty sure next year I'll be asked to bring two :-)
