Hi all, first post here and a complete newbie to sugaring. We bought an old farmhouse this Fall and I wasn't thinking about collecting sap at that time otherwise I would have marked the maples by the remaining leaves.

I snagged a lot of 10 buckets, covers and taps for a steal so here I am wanting to do a small batch to teach myself the ropes but have only the bark and bare limbs to judge trees by. Would any more experienced member be willing to help me ID a few trees?

Here goes.

I am 99% sure this is a maple - does the long shaggy bark indicate a mature sugar maple?

I'm less sure about this tree but it's in the same vicinity and seems to have opposite terminal limbs:

Now, these trees seem to have the same opposing small twig/limbs at the ends but the bark looks quite different:

Finally, there are two giant mature trees of this look right in my backyard but I was thinking they were oaks:

Here's a closer shot of the second one - not winning any photography awards here!

ADK_XJ,

Maples will have opposite branching pattern (as do Ash) if you can see the limbs and twigs it will help you narrow down your trees

tress with opposite branching pattern

Maple. Ash. Dogwood. Buckeye

ash will have moderately stout twigs, generally have bark with ridges narrow and separated by deep furrows, forming a diamond pattern; becomes blockier with maturity

Hey ADK XJ like someone else said I believe the trees are maple, maple, oak and oak. Not 100% sure if they are sugar or red maples but look like sugars. I'm down in Ballston Spa so if you would like I could take a close look at them for you.

Oh, great - I have a call into the Cornell co-op because I was told over on Hearth.com that I can have their master forrestors go through the property and ID everything. If that falls through, I'll shoot you a PM. Much appreciated.

Thanks for all the responses - that helped me quite a bit! Now to wait out the temp swing up here in NE NY.
