What does everyone think of using a very well cleaned chest freezer as a sap tank in woods?? Should keep sap cool, and fairly easy to clean once or twice a week??

I would'nt reccomend it if you are going to sell syrup. If the syrup is just for you, you could try it.
My concern would be the weight of however many gallons of sap it could hold. Is the liner (or the whole unit) strong enough to support that?
And make sure the drain plug can't come out by accident.
No chance of finding a used cage tank or some barrels- anything else that would not have a problem?

I have used chest freezers in the past filled with water to store baitfish, so i think they are plenty strong. My concern was if I could clean the interior well enough that there wouldnt be any odors passed onto the sap and onto the syrup.. freezer burn smell and such. I would think a light bleach solution or baking soda mixture would to it.

Yes, sap is very sensitive to that sort of thing. Again, it might just be easier and safer to round up a cage tank or some other style of plastic tank.

I am not freezer expert but I doubt the insides are approved food grade for direct contact, I would imagine they may be rated for incidental contact but I doubt direct as food generaly is in containers when put in a freezer.
