Took a walk in the bush today to see what was going on up there. One thing for sure we're gonna work for the sap the snow is crazy if it had one layer of crust in it some were it would be a lot easier walking it's just all the same fluffy snow. Got some trails busted in and trails hope for no more snow i don't think we need it. Had one line that got hooked onto by a snowmobile turned it into 3/16 tubing and broke the tubing not the fittings stayed together other then that things looked good. Sam the sap dog didn't take to long to decide he could just follow me. anyway here are some pics.

I went through my sugar woods to check for damage this week - I even took my camera thinking I'd take some pictures of damage, deep snow, etc. Never saw anything worth immortalizing in JPEG, though. Now that I see your thread, I wish I had a couple pics. I found almost no rodent damage (seriously, like 3 spots), but I had several 1" mainline to 3/4" branch line T's that had either broken or pulled off sometime during the deep freeze. Yes, the snow is fluffy, but I was surprised that it wasn't deeper. And I'd certainly rather snowshoe in this than when it's above freezing and cakes on the snowshoes!

This is a new area I tapped this year. First time this tree has had buckets on it! The slope is gradual and the maples get much more abundant further down the hill!

Not pictures, but if you click on the link below you'll get to a youtube movie that a friend made of our sugarhouse. It was on MPBN and the Maine International Film Festival.

I really enjoyed watching that video Revi. It makes me want to fire up the burners - if the sap would fill up my buckets.

Here are a few with my daughter yesterday. She was amazed at how the tubing worked she had been in this bush before but was pretty little. She tested the sap and said it was good and sweet. She wants everyone to know she didn't fall she was just sliding down the hill because it was faster.

Thanks! A friend of mine made it. Nelson Cole from New Farmer Films is an amazing film maker!

Revi, what was that little motorized vehicle with the white poly talk, that the boys were using? I think I need something like that!

That little vehicle is a DR Powerwagon. It works to get wood out also. It's a lot like driving one of those sickle bar mowers. It works well to get wood out, and we used to use it to get sap also. You can get chains for the wheels which make it go anywhere. It cost about $1400 new when we got it.

I think it costs more now, but not too much more. Don't bother getting the electric start. It stopped working but you can still start it with a pull cord.

Thanks Revi,
I get DR's catalog every so often, but I had never seen this thing. It looks like it would work perfectly for late season road crossings.

It doesn't goo too fast, but it's perfect for moving heavy stuff around. It worked well for us. We did some pre-commercial thinning and a lot of the wood was thin popple. I took off the front and got out a lot of loads of wood which worked perfectly for the evaporator.
