I gained access to a 40 acre piece with a nice grade, plenty of sugars, some reds... but there is one section loaded with what I believe is norways, then some very large ones spaced down thru the good slope.
is this a norway? Bark doesnt appear to be ash, and if so worth tapping?
Also the landowner wants to team up and manage this piece for the beneficial maples, any recommendations on reading would be great.
thanks

The Norways look remarkably like ash. On buckets they act a lot like reds, in yards or along a drive with big crowns they can flood you with sap in the woods they might not give a drop. Sugar content on mine can get as high as 3%. This year less than 2%. Flavor is similar to reds, nutty and smoky.

I have mostly Norways. I get about 2 1/4 % or more. The syrup is slightly different, but everybody that's tried it loves it. Keep in mind that they are an invasive species when you are making your forest management decisions. But are they worth tapping? Yes!

Invasive, yes. Also "Illegal" in some states. Whatever that translates to I don't know. In PA they are everywhere.

I'm with 3goathill. They are prone to losing big branches in heavy snow events, and tend to split dramatically in super cold weather, but they burn nicely. Wherever you have an opportunity to favor a better tree, take out the Norway. I tap a few in the neighbors yard, and they are unreliable.

I'm going to recommend these are taken out. This landowner is very interested in making the hillside ideal for the numerous sugars and reds which are very well established (ie. All age brackets represented). If the syrup is a different end result I'll stick to my other options as this is what I have available on my other properties.

It's illegal to plant Norways in Massachusetts.

I tap a few Norway's here in Michigan. They flow really well for me and sugar is usually right at 3 and sometimes a bit higher. I tapped two yesterday but did not take a sugar reading yet.

I have a massive Norway maple in my back yard. Big enough for four taps. And over 4 years I haven't gotten a bucket a season out of it...
