Drilling frozen trees?

What r the things to do tapping frozen trees besides waiting till it warms up,like how different is the sound n feel putting the tap in,I use a plastic hammer n it bounces back n have never split a hole yet but frozen is different?

We usually drill frozen trees. There is a definite sound difference when the tap is seated correctly. I believe splitting is easier in frozen wood. It does make a nice clean round hole.

That's what I thought frozen easier to split that's why I asked

I've said this before but I'll repeat it. Better to go easy and give it another tap or two later on when you are checking lines. As you get experienced you will learn to tell by sound and get it right the first time. But with very cold temps usually at the beginning of the season a good hard frost will likely push a few taps out a little and then you will get a leak

Thanks,just never had it tap when frozen still might not either,waiting it out only 8hrs or so above on Sunday n forecast keeps going colder for Sunday then solid for next 7-10 days?? I know the sound but didn't know if a difference when frozen

Thanks for the thread. I'm going to tap some of my trees today, but never done it when it was this frozen!

I figured I was in the same boat and all the help here is priceless,still undecided to tap today tomorrow or wait till this next cold stretch is past?i us a craftsman plastic on one side rubber on the other side,I use the plastic side to hammer in n it bounces back nice when seated!
