Damper In Stack For Flue Pan Hood

I have a 2X5 flue pan with a hood, pre-heater and 8" stack. I was told I need to install a damper in the stack. What kind of damper and where is it installed. Thanks for any information any one can give me.

You should not need a damper. Give us more information on your set up. Inside, outside, type of arch, blower, stack heigth, Any other info you can give

No you don't need one, you might actually need to go to a 10" stack as a 8" is borderline small for that size pan

Wait a minute......we're talking steam stack right? You never put a damper in a exhaust stack .

Yes he is talking about the steam stack. An 8" stack should handle the steam from your hood without a problem. My hood is 2x4 and and the 8" stack on that is more than adequate. My stack is about 10' tall and has a good draft and it vents into my cupola.

The purpose of the damper in the steam stack is to slow down the steam flow so that the preheater will get hotter. Mine has a damper in it but I run it wide open because I have an RO and the efficiency gain isn't that much. The steam stack will use the same type of damper as a smoke stack for a wood stove. You will want to get one that is made out of aluminum and the best place to get it would probably be a maple supplier.

I have a 2X4 flue pan and the hood has a 6 inch stack. I leave both sliding doors wide open. They are about 12 x 5 each. Sap going into the rear pan is 190 with doors open or closed. No dampner in the stack.
