First timer here..... at the farthest tree away from my tank or begining of my lateral lines, do i need to have the first spile vented?

Do not vent.

first time with a tubing system.. I wasnt sure if not venting it would obstruct the flow.

Venting = sap moves much faster through the line, but yield is 30-50% lower.
No venting = sap moves slower though the line, but yield is 30-50% higher..

Take your pick.

How long can i run 5/16" on a gravity system and how many taps can 5/16" handle before i start thinking about adding a mainline?

The guys I talk to here in Cumberland county Nova Scotia are running 5-15 taps per lateral into there main line. I read some were its up to 25 but none of the big producers here seem to going that high and I have been told 15 is the max.

I have 29 taps on 1600' of 5/16 line. Seems to be working. Getting 13" of vac on first day. Hoping to tighten it up and get a bit more but I'm still learning how to tighten it up.

Sandersyrup is that run with all 5/16th and NO mainline? Sorry, I'm pretty much a rookie too and a friend and I have been try to get a flat bush set up on gravity with poor results. We are trying to get fall by moving up the trees as we move from the collection tank. Have 5-6 ft of drop from one end to other. 3/4" mainline with 7 laterals. Each lateral has 7-18 taps. The fall to the mainline is pretty good, or so I thought. Not much production. In a typical collection we will get 20 gallons from 70 taps. :(. That's 1 to 2 days of collecting on good run days. 10669

Better pic. There is 300 ft of mainline total. I'm sorry for asking redundant (?) Questions but if you have 29 taps on 1600 ft why isn't that like a giant lateral? If anyone has a thread that covers this I'd be happy to do the reading and not bother you. Thanks again.

Oops, I meant 3/16 line. Yes, one giant lateral. With, 3/16 line I hope to see a natural vacuum effect. My trees are in a flat bush as well so stringing the trees together was a challenge. But luckily my trees are on a hill so after the last tree it drops 150'. I was told on here that laterals going into a mainline would not be ideal and 3/16 can handle up to 30 taps on vac. However next year because I have more trees I can expand to, it may make more sense to have a mainline midway down my hill catching laterals of about 4-7 taps each after about 50' of drop.

My biggest issue is that my system must be broken down each season completely. One long line = easy to wind up at the end of the season.

Getting 13" of vac on first day.

Assuming you have plenty of drop, start where you gauge is (presumably at the top?) and go down about 15' in elevation and start looking.
