I got a bottle out from last year that looks like the syrup has turned to hard candy in the bottom of the bottle. First, did I get it to hot to cause this? And how can I get it out so I can reuse the bottle?

The syrup was too dense when it was put in the bottle. Did you measure the density with a hydrometer?

To get the crystals out, fill the bottle with hot water and let it sit for a while (overnight or a couple of days, just shake it occasionally). Pour the liquid out and refill with hot water a couple of times until all the sugar crystals are dissolved. Or you could just start with a fresh bottle.
