Hi all just wondering what gauge of galvanized sheet steel to use for sides of a homemade arch I am planning to build ooh yeah 5 years maple sugaring 2x6 flat pan using blocks in past moving up taps with bags 20 to 50 to last year 75 to pipe line this year 100 plus taps.

20 ga should be good, even 22 or 24 ga. but they are more easily damaged. The firebrick protects the sides from extreme heat.

I used 14 gauge stainless on mine. Only because it was free!
I would not use galvanized steel. The heat could cause the galvanizing to fume off and the fumes can be toxic.

I used sheets of Aluminum, 20 ga. I think. But I also have the arch well insulated with 2" of fiber blanket as well. Gets warm after several hours of boiling, but nothing extreme.

my first two arches had 22 ga galv on outside i had two inches of fire brick on inside never had any problems with it my new arch is 1/8 inch cold rolled just cause i wanted to be able weld everthing togather for air tight seal for my high pressure arch

Galv is what came on my rig never saw it fume but did rust after a few years so I know it had to have burned off
