We are going from 35 to 85 taps this spring and my question is has anyone hung 5 gallon buckets on the soule 7/16 hook less spile. Currently I have several 3.5 gallon buckets I use on them and have not had trouble. I also have mainly the leader aluminum 4 gallon pails. I have the taps I just need buckets. I can have all Ithe 5 gallon buckets I want for the great price of free from the local bakery. The down side is they only get 5 gallon buckets and lids. Will that extra gsllon be too much. I know many use drop lines and put them on the ground but I'm trying to avoid buying new taps and line to do this since I have the soule taps. Thanks

try it to see. If it fails just drill the side of the bucket at 4.5 gal and try, then 4 gal if necessary. Someplace in those 3 it will work. A spile hanging hole in the side will be an overflow drain too. What I did in my early years was put a container on the ground (mine were 5 gal cooking oil jugs, could be your bakery buckets), drill a hole in the lid and then run a plastic tap on 5/16 tubing to the ground container. I also put a spring clamp on the tubing inside the container to keep it from pulling out. Since mine were jugs, the hole was in the screw cap, I just unscrewed it and then either poured the sap into a carry container, or sometimes I swapped out to an empty jug and carried the full or mostly full jug to be emptied.

I have hung 5 gallon buckets on leader clear seasonal spouts. None broke.

The five gallon buckets shouldn't be a problem if you are collecting from them at the same time as the other buckets because they should have the same "weight" in them as your 3.5 gallon buckets.
