View Full Version : Arch rebuild: Nice and easy way to make a base stack, or am I an idiot?

Trying to do an arch rebuild on the cheap, was agonizing the 16" oval to 8" base stack problem.

I found something at the box store, and had an idea that I haven't seen here.
It took me an hour to make the base stack.

I used a floor register with 8" round output.

Is this as easy as it seems, or am I missing something? the gauge is a little light, but I figure I'll pack ceramic blanket in it.

What do you think?

Couple problems I see. First off yes, that will burn right through. 2nd , you still don't have a smooth transition from square to round. Go down to the local hvac shop and tell the, or show them a picture of what you want. They should be able to bend it out of 20 gauge for $50-75.

I think it's worth a shot. The height of it will help with spreading the heat across the pan. I'm not sure the trouble attaching blanket is worth it though. It will burn up, but will take a couple seasons. I use 8" duct for my stack and it is going on it's 3rd season and still holding up well.

This might work just fine. On a budget we try different things. I think you did pretty good. Keep a eye on it as it is fairly thin and may get pretty hot.
