Would stock tanks that tractor supply sells be good to collect sap in? Thanks

No. They were used for years but are not food grade. Get a food grade plastic or stainless tank.

The tanks tractor supply sells are fine I mean, the sap buckets people use are galvinized and they are fine.

Are you talking galvanized or plastic? Like drinking troth or of sprayer tank sort?

plastic troth. Local feed store sells them and they say sugar houses are buying them for collection.

That's what I thought. I'm not sure they are food grade, but they are better than galvanized.

I wouldn`t use any galvanized new or old and only food grade plastic unless you like the funny sell or taste from cheap plastic do it right the first time and there will be no worries

Tractor Supply does sell several plastic tanks that are food grade such as Rubbermaid and poly tanks for sap pickup.

I was thinking the Rubbermaid ones were food grade, but I was looking online and it didn't say so I didn't want to mislead anyone.

Memory can be fuzzy, but do a search on here for Rubbermaid. I'm pretty sure some one on here contacted them and they would not confirm food grade.

this is the type we used to use...most feed stores (local, not TSC) like agway can order them.

and yes, food grade plastic

What is wrong with new galvanized tanks? Sap buckets are galvanized....

"Stock" tanks are not intended for food storage or preparation. They are not food-grade. Have you tried to find a NEW galvanized sap bucket lately? Many places do not sell them.

The problem with galvanized buckets or stock tanks is not in the soldered joints verse welded joints. It is in the Zink used for galvinizing. Zink can contain Lead & Cadmium which have been proven to not be good for your health & are especially bad for children & unborn children.

Generally speaking galvanized is OK for water with a balanced PH level like town water but is not considered good for Acidic liquids like sap that tend to have a low PH.
Lots of folks will debate this but that is the science as I understand it.

I have several plastic tanks for gathering that are made for potable water,50,125 and 210 gallon, tsc sells them as do many farm supply stores. just make sure they are made for potable water and you will be fine. I would rather not use plastic at all but trying to find a ss tank with tight screw on lid are hard to fin, and the prices for ss gatherings tanks are crazy. galv buckets and tanks are slowly going away and for good reason.

Here is a stock tank that is FDA approved that would work.
