View Full Version : Anyone ever filter syrup using a jet pump?

Not sure if this would work but could one make a homemade pressurized syrup filter using a shallow well jet pump? For example, if I had a jet pump that I only used for a maple syrup RO system would I be able to pump warm/hot syrup through a liter with it?

I doubt the seal would take the heat. It would be hard to clean. The volume of syrup to prime the pump and would be left in the case when done would be huge compared to the traditional gear pump. Also way too high of flow for a filter press

I don't think you will like the affect of the impeller on the syrup. Any entrapped air will be mixed into the syrup and the back pressure will curtail your flow.

Gear pumps are a positive displacement pump. The teeth of the gear fills with syrup and moves the syrup around the housing to the outlet and is able to produce relatively high pressure easily to force product thru the DE an filter element.

You can often find these pumps relatively inexpensive on ebay. I got a pump and a rebuild kit for under $50 shipped to my door. The pump turned out to be brand new and so was the rebuild kit. Roper is a great pump also and we use the 1.25 and 2" models in our mill to pump molasses. Some of these have a relief valve system but stay in the 1/2"-3/4" as the 1" will pump 10 gallons a minute on our setup.

send me a pm if you want a link to a pump that I would buy.

Thanks all, I see your point on the hose and impeller issues. Didn't think of that before I posted....
