I bought a #8 Orlon filter and want to know if I can use cheesecloth as a pre filter. Also I have what is called a Matfer Exoglass bouillon strainer, it is a very fine stainless steel mesh strainer used to filter water out of Greek yogurt and stuff like that, would this work as a suitable pre filter. Thanks.

I think that would work fine for pre-filtering your sap.

You are going to want to run a few pre-filters (stack about 4) so you can pull, rinse, replace as they clog.

What would you recommend to use for a pre filter with the orlon. Any certain brand or type.

Are you referring to the cheese cloth or the Exoglass strainer or both?

Why don't u just purchase the prefilters made for the syrup filters?

Will do, just trying to see if stuff I already have will work, isn't that what backyard sugaring is about.

Oh for sure! Speaking of which there is a great book called backyard sugarin that I would recommend, it talks about all that kind of stuff on the low key...

Thank you very much, I actually ordered that book last week and it will be here on Monday and I am really looking forward to it coming in as this will be my first chance to try to make the good maple stuff since I spent last 24 years in the military. Once again thank you.

I tried using different materials inside of Orlon filter and in the same year bought another one with the right prefilters. You won't regret just the convienence factor they offer. I'll put two or three stacked inside of each other and as they slow and clog just move one side out of the way to continue to drain. Then once done with filtering they wash out out decent for the next boil. Orlon has little to no noticible sand using them.

I'm using a flat filter this season (ordered press for next!). Are the prefilters able to be rinsed and re-used??

Yes you can reuse the prefilters, I hang mine over the syrup pan to drain and steam the rest of the sugar out. You can then rinse and wash in hot water but do not wring them out or you will damage them.

I learned here to freeze them n the main filter then next boil dip them in the next first batch of sap when it's boiling to rinse but don't turn them inside out in the sap naturally! You don't loose any syrup!
