My contractor hasn't build cupolas before, so is a bit curious as to the best way to build the long-side walls that will hinge open. The cupola is 12' long. He said he could get boards that are 8' long, but 12' would require some sort of joining.

How have others dealt with this issue?

I just used 12 foot long boards, available at any lumberyard or sawmill.

In Vermont we have trees that are taller than 8'. Seriously, you need a different contractor.

run the boards vertical on your cupola door framing. mine are 2ft high and door is 6ft long.

Or use old storm windows.
