I'm planning to build a float box for my new Smoky Lake hybrid pan. Jim's look beautiful, but just can't swing the money for one right now. So looks like I'll be building my own (and I like building stuff...)

I already have a float valve I bought off Ebay. Would a small steam tray pan work for the box? They're not perfectly square, but I don't think that would matter. I know the float needs to be flat in order to be sensitive enough.

Any suggestions or pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Mount the steam tray a little lower than your pan so you have enough sap so the float doesn't bottom out. I used a 6x10 and it's just about right. Found a brass rod at lowes in the toilet isle to connect the float to the valve.

Where did you get the brass float valve?

You can use a round float but you need to have your floatbox lower than your pan by a couple inches. I did this and it works great.

eBay. I sprung for a name brand one, not sure if it mattered or not. I believe it cost $18. I know there are some on there for only a few bucks.

Machinist,
I bought the valve on ebay - like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BK-Muller-1-2-034-Heavy-Duty-Brass-Float-Valve-NEW-/381023490930?
