I'm building a 20x14 board and batton shed, getting ready to lay the flooring down on 2x6 pt frame. Should I use 2x6 or 1x rough cut pine? I have both on hand.

I would personally use 2x6 on the floor if you have enough on hand, only If you will be loading it up with a bunch of weight. But 1" rough cut boards should hold fine with 16OC floor joists. I guess it all depends what you will be storing in the shed.

Yes it is 16oc. 2x6 was my original plan but sometimes I over think things a little.

If you have an abundance of 2x6 boards then by all means use those. What will this shed mainly be used to store anyway?

Its going to hold my evaporator, and also used as a small workshop/ storage area. Access is limited to walking in the winter months until I build a year round access road, but its down hill just out back behind my house.

Well in that case, since like most people say, you will expand.. I would just use the 2x6 flooring for sure. So when you get a giant evaporator down the road, you wont have to worry about weight. Although then you might have to worry about the actual frame the flooring is resting on. Post up some pictures if you could. I would like to see.

Just got a small saw mill and will be building a wood shed next year to store wood for my outdoor wood boiler.
I would also go the 2x6 route. Like nhshaun said you never know what's coming down the road

Thinking of a saltbox type design, maybe 10/12 pitch. 10' front wall and 8' at the back, thinking the 10 will give me just enough room for a decent overhang in the front. Should I use a ridge beam and collar ties, or collars and plates, or just collars? 2x6 rafters. I'd like to just use rough cut and stay away from the plywood plates if possible

a 2x3 will be fine on 2x6 floor frame. I would use the 2x6 for the floors if you have it it will be that much stronger!!!

if your thinking of going any bigger you might wanna put supports under where the evap will go. I have a 2x6 evap and used 2x10 16"centers for floor frame and doubled up on the 2x10's under the evap. just in case.

What Red Maples said. And make sure you build your door large enough. I like that design you are looking at, my father has always wanted to build something like that on our property.

Not much done today. Had to sort through my wood, got some walls cut ready to frame. Having conflicting ideas about ceiling joists/ rafter ties. Made the decision to go with 2x8 rafters with 2x6 joists. The joists will sit on the wall plate on the 10' side and nailed to the rafters at the 8' back wall 2' above the wall plate.

Platform looks strong and sturdy, nice work. I think your idea for the rafter/joists sounds sufficient. Making some space overhead for extra storage?

Don't know if I'm gonna get the roof sheathed before the first snow tomorrow.

If you get an early start tomorrow you just might, If not throw a tarp over it. The snow isn't supposed to start till late morning. Lookin good though, and you have some help, nice!

Snow storm attacked and I lost power in the afternoon, so the roof remains unsheathed

As for the floor, I'd suggest you use which ever you have the least alternative use for. I'll explain, while you are going with a wood floor now (as I did in the beginning), you will likely remove that and put down a concrete one in the future (as I did, 3 yrs after building the wood floor. In any case, with wood, be real sure you protect the floor from the fire or sparks.

Trying to decide on metal or asphalt roof now. I may not have enough lumber on hand to sheath the roof and side it also. Im gonna side it first and see what I have left. The metal is more expensive but quicker and less work only having to apply strapping, compared to the asphalt which has to be fully sheathed.

I would personally go with the metal roof, it looks better, lasts longer and you won't have to worry too much about the snow building up. Plus you can just strap the roof, instead of sheathing the whole thing.. There is some towards the difference in price from asphalt to metal.

Finished sheathing the roof and had plenty left for the siding, the darkness and snow keeps slowing me down

Siding up and roof trimmed out. No windows yet but will add some when I find them. Thinking of a sliding door in the front, just need to find some hardware.

Looks like it's time to move in haha. We have some decent weather ahead this weekend, Hopefully you can get some more done. I have seen the sliding door hardware at Ace before, if not there is always the world wide web.
