I am getting ready to build an arch from a 275 gallon fuel oil tank. The tank is 27" x 60" and will hold a 2 x 5 combo pan from smoky lake. I am wondering if anyone has photos or plans they can share from their builds. I am specifically interested in fire box dimensions, insulating stories, and what you used for a door. Thanks!

Another question that just came to me is the angle iron. is 1.5 inch going to work? Or should it be 2 inch?

Here's a couple from my build. Can't find the others. My fire box is about 20" deep. Seems to work great. For the door, I just cut out the steel and welded angle to the opening and the door. If you do this be sure to fasten blanket or board to it or it will warp. The ramp is just sheet metal screwed to angle that is welded inside the tank. I also extended mine with the top half of the tank to accommodate a 6' pan and the stack. No extra material needed. Good luck with your build!

Thanks, psparr. Looks good. I think I'm going to cut the whole top off and run the stack out the back with an elbow. How did you insulate? Bricks only, or blanket and brick?

I used both in the firebox area. Just blanket on the ramp. You might want to consider extending for the stack. You want the heat to be up against the pan. Not being drawn to the center and down to make it to your flue pipe. It is an extra step but well worth it in terms of heat transfer.
