We've expanded our honey operation, so we'll be selling more of it. I'm not really sure what honey's selling for. Last year, we sold 1/2 mason jars for $7 and pint jars for $12, and sold all of it in short order, but then again, we didn't have much to sell. This year, we'll package some quart mason jars and I'm thinking $22 for it, but then my wife goes to the local farm stand to buy corn, and they're selling it for $30...seems wicked high.

What's honey being sold for?

Thanks

we retail one pound for $10.00 two pounds for $15.00 and quart mason jars (three pounds)for$20.00
It seems cheap for all that goes into it around here. I've seen it advertised locally (Manchester NH) for $4.00 per pound in your own five gallon bucket.

Comparable prices will be by weight. A pound of honey (typically) is 10.57 ounces, so that quart they are selling is somewhere around 3 lbs.

A lot depends on where you sell it and how many other beeks are in the area. I sell for $8/pound in 1 lb. jars and $7/pound bulk. I think I'm too low, though. Like syrup, if people will pay it, that's where to price it.

Sean. that's a little confusing. I think you mean a pound of honey (16 oz) by weight will = 10.57 ounces by volume. That would make a quart of honey by volume weigh about 3 pounds.

Josh, you can also weigh an empty jar then fill it and weigh it again. Subtract the weight of the jar to get the weight of the honey. Or if you have a decent scale, put the jar on the scale and tare the jar weight by zeroing the scale before filling. When you fill the jar you'll end up with the weight of just the honey.

I googled "honey prices" and it came up with a chart of average prices per pound over all retail sizes from 2006-2014 by month. 2014 shows Jan at $5.98. May is high at $6.40 and Aug is down to $6.32.
This is going to likely be a national average and there is very likely large regional variations. Price it locally, what ever the market will bear. If you can get more, there is no reason to match the "national average". Remember, averages are made up of all the highs and lows, and just like maple syrup prices, there is a wide range of prices regionally. Also realize, the averages are only made up by averaging those who reported and many likely choose not to report.

Thanks for the info. It seems like my prices are about right, and I'll see how good it moves this fall/holiday season.

We have been at $10.00 for 2 lb, $6.00 for 1 lb., $5.00 for 12 oz., $4.00 for 1/2 lb. Maybe I need to look a possible price increase. Local honey is scarce here this season.

Chris

Yes, that is what I meant.
