Does RO remove anything in addition to water? I realize it doesn't remove sugar, but I'm wondering about other things like minerals, or whatever, that might be similar in size to water. Thank you.

If an ro is functioning correctly, it removes nothing but water.

depending on the membrane I understood that potassium may pass as well because it is a simple molecule? Is this correct?

I think you may be missing that the way we usea membrane and the way a water purification unit uses the membrane are not the same. What we maple producers want; is the product that is discarded in water purification. What we discard is the purified water.
So when everything is working properly...clean and the membrane is not loading with sugar and adequate flow is passing over the membrane and away, there will be no sugar or minerals passing into the permeate line.
Now on the other hand, most RO units have at least one prefilters that will clean out foreign mater that will damage pumps and membranes.
