We just ordered a 2x4 mason XML hobby evaporator. Going to downsize from our 2x8 cdl. Excited about trying this one out next season. Anyone have experience with these?

Are you downsizing the operation, or using a RO to concentrate or concentrate higher before boiling?

Farm is for sale. Selling the 2x8 cdl going to still do syrup but on a smaller scale.

You will enjoy that evaporator. Good call going with reverse flow on the pan. They are pretty straight forward, but one thing I would do for sure is build up the back of the arch with brick and or arch board so the flames get right up against the pan on the back half. If you got the blower make sure you find a way to adjust the speed/air flow so the stack doesn't turn bright red. Have fun.

I am narrowed down to the Mason 2x4 or the 2x4 XL with the reverse flow and better preheater design. However, I am wondering if its worth the extra few hundred dollars. Any ideas?

I have the XL, I can not compare to the strait 2x4 but the reverse flow and extra sections is great. I got mine just before this season and really liked the setup. Get the blower it makes all the difference in the world. Easy to birck and setup and can easily handle more taps than Bill says. You will be glad you went with the XL.

I have the straight 2x3 but I got the better preheater design. I don't have any experience with the XL pan so I can't tell you how much difference the new pan makes. I can tell you the blower makes a huge difference but like Loch said you'll need to slow the fan down or you will melt your stack pipe.

Well we ordered the mason XL 2x4. Just deciding if we drive to Maine to pick it up or have it delivered. Our cdl went to its new home in west Virginia.
