Good for you, with a 3x8 and an RO you can process lots of syrup. Did you get a drop flue or raised flue?

Congrats! I Am going from a 2x6 and ro with a spanked membrane to a 3x8 raised flue with a MES membrane. Super psyched and can't wait. Also going from 1100 taps to almost 2400. Gonna be busy!!

yeah im not really sure whats in store for next year yet I could stay at 500 and just put it all on vacuum or I might get another woods and be at 1800 and maybe get an RO over the winter if I have the money, its a drop flue with a pre heater and steam hood and the Grimm wood saver is on it im also looking into an automatic draw off,but now the reall fun bigens time to get it set in place and start fire bricking and put in a bigger stack!!!!

Good for you! It's early in the year so it gives you time to get it set up the way you want it.

Awesome! I just got a new to me 30 x 8 made by GH Grimm along with a whole bunch of tanks and vacuum stuff. Sounds like your ahead of me though since I have to build a whole new sugar house to fit the thing into. Your rig will make 500 taps seem like a walk in the park with a preheater and blower on it. What size it the stack on it right now?

Before bricking it, look into air over fire. Now is the best time to study that. AOF will create a faster boil AND use less wood, a win/win in anybodies book. There's a few threads on here about it, and most reference a publication about how to build one (Vermont Proctor ?)

this rig sure is gonna make my sugar house seem really small now,and it has a 12 inch stack,I think it has both AUF and AOF it has a Grimm wood saver underneath then another fan that feeds two pipes that are up on the ramp of the arch, yesterday I sanded the arch down and painted with high heat black pain it looks brand new now ill get it in the sugar house this weekend and start setting it up then ill get some pictures :D

Not AOF, at least not what I would consider, need two 3" x 6" rails down each side centered around 6" from top rail of arch. Check my pictures out, 802 Maple guided me on how to build it.
like some one else said now the time to modify and insulate, only need bricks where you throw the wood no where else unless you are going to use a flue brush then brick on top of the insulation to you dont rip it up.
Come over to P town Whitetail my rig is apart you can check it out, like a 40 minute trip from the Lake

While the 2 pipes bring air into the firebox may help a little, it may not and could actually reduce the boil. The air inlet I see in the ramp looks to be aimed up. If I'm looking at that right, that will blow colder air at the bottom of the pan. For AOF you need a manifold built with nozzles aimed down I think it was 12 degrees, and spaced every 6 apart and 6" below the pan. These nozzles should run along both sides and below the ramp as well as up to the door for fueling. Then they need to be fed by a "high pressure" blower, not a squirrel cage blower. A high pressure blower has paddles that throw the air, while a squirrel cage flings it. In the AOF the air will be aimed down into the center of the fire and will have the pressure needed to create the turbulence to mix the air and gases for better combustion. A squirrel cage has lots of air movement but does not have the necessary pressure to mix the gases. While squirrel cage blowers make the fire burn faster they do little or nothing to improve efficiency, and may actually reduce efficiency while burning more wood. Check out the Proctor MRC publication on AOF. It contains design specifics based on the evaporator width and blower requirements.
All this being said, I did cut corners on my manifold and it still works wonders. I have a 3x8 and my manifold is only 2x2 sq. tube, with the nozzles pointed and spaced as specified in the report. However I think my HP blower may be larger than specified (not sure, it is likely 80+ yrs old and I have no specs) but that may partially compensate for the smaller manifold tubing.

well it has the grimm wood saver on the bottom, and the guy I bought it from said the other pipes that come through the ramp really got him an even boil in the syrup pan,the pipes are kind of aimed up because they are just hanging in there right now with it hooked up to the fan I think it straight across the fire

If that is the case, at least try to aim it down into the middle of the fire at the suggested angle. What is there for that AOF blower? Make and model might help.
