Has anyone tried to filter syrup using a cartridge filter with filter paper and DE? Also heating syrup and using a pump.

Most paper filters aren't rated for high temperature, same for pumps, you have to be sure they're food grade and rated for the temperature.

I was thinking of using a hot water filter used for domestic water and slip a filter sock made out of piece of filter paper over the cartridge.

I think you'd lose a lot of syrup in the cartridge filter. I know the 1 micron cartridge filters get plugged very easily when filtering sap. I can't imagine how quickly they would plug with syrup and sugar sand.

Agreed.
I did a lot of research on this idea, before building my own press, but there are high temperature filters assemblies and cartridges available at a "reasonable" cost. Here is a couple links for you. Both are rated at 200 degrees, so you should feel OK even if you go slightly over. The cartridge has a stainless steel core.
