First time boiling sap , so some learning curve was expected. Anyway finished product has a firewood or ashy taste ( was fired in drum with free flying ashes ). Can this be removed or is it there for keeps ? Thought about reheating and refiltering but maybe another approach might be smarter. Thanks for ideas and suggestions.

Did you filter it? I have a smokey taste in the syrup I did, but have been told it was a good smokey taste. As far as ash I think if that was the case you might have not filtered out the fly ash.
