I am going to be building a arch for a set of 2 by 6 pans. What do you guys use for grates? That is the one part that has me stumped.

Thanks

I made a 4x4 this past year and I used 1 1/4" angle iron! put it up so it looks like a V! The V fills with ash and the angle iron is insulated! worked perfect! they didn't warp the slightest bit... even with some 12-14 hour boils!

I just used this sort of stuff (http://www.metalsdepot.com/products/hrsteel2.phtml?page=steelgrating&LimAcc=%20&aident=). Picked up some of the odd sections my local steel supplier had as leftovers, that were on sale.

Heres one that I built using 1 1/4" angle iron. I bolted it together since Santa hasn't brought me a MIG welder yet. It worked very well and no warping under very hot fires.9691

All the steel grates are going to rot out. Even cheap cast iron doesn't hold up. Consider using firebricks with holes drilled in them for grates. Add a blower and you will do some boiling!

they will probably rot out over time! mine still look real good after 1 year! I did mine just like ren46 but it was welded! i put the v on the top side of the angle iron ends and built a frame around my fire box that i could just drop them in to (imagine a L shape and an upside down L shape)! that way if they do rot out, you can take them out and build new ones cheap!

I did exactly as ren did and no they will not rot out. I welded them together and over 3 years in my 2x6 I logged over 300 hours of hard boiling and they looked brand new when I sold it.

I ran across some cast iron house radiators last Fall. If you are interested I'll see if the lady hasn't scrapped them. I'm in north-central MA.
