Anyone have a Maple Jet FilterPress sold on Maple guys website? What size is it, what size papers does it take? What is your experience with it?

Wall Hollow, did you end up finding anything out about this filter press?

has anyone else had experience with the Maple Jet filter press? I'm looking at getting something, and if this works well, its definitely the best price on a hand pump one.

The best place for that answer is to contact Chris at the Maple Guys. He can answer all questions, is easy to deal with, no high pressure and he can give you the name of some who bought one to ask.

best to talk to someone who bought one. Def. ask chris though. Personally I would spend the extra $$$ and get a little 7" wes fab or something like that with a motor. but thats just me.

Thanks Guys, I'll give him a call. I'd like to go all out and get a motorized press, but am trying to upgrade with profits now, and didnt quite make the 1200 for a wesfab. the hand press is in my price range and has to be a step up from the gravity filtering, maybe a bit less waste. Thanks for the input.

I purchased one of these presses last year after seeing it at the lapierre open house in VT. It has worked great for us, all our syrup gets put in glass and there is little to no sediment in any of the bottles. when i first used it i had a hard time pumping and figured it was from a half kinked hose on the unit. i rerouted the hose with an elbow and has worked great since. we usually filter batches of about 4-5 gallons of syrup and have had no problems. it all breaks down fairly handy for cleaning and there is virtually no lost syrup or syrup that needs re filtering as you would get when you break down a larger press. I am used to motorized presses and this is the first time I've tried a hand pump and am plesantly surprized. The only draw back is you must buy specific papers from the maple guys and they are not as cheap as your normal 7" paper. This beats a cone filter any day. it is worth the investment to the smaller producer in my opinion. The maple guys were very good to deal with and i wouldnt hesitate to give them a call and check out this press.

bcmhs800,

Isn't the Maple Jet Filter Press a modified Buon Vino Super Jet (i.e. swapped the electric motor out for a hand pump)? Would it use the same type of filters?

For what its worth, check out the 5" presses being made by Daryl Sheets in PA. I bought one last year and it is awesome, his press was around $800 last year but definitly worth the money. The 5" papers can be gotten through CDL or Daryl.

It appears your right, I've never seen that before but searched it and yes it is the same unit with a hand pump. looking at the filters though it appears the wine filters are a lot thicker and a lot more expensive but are the same shape. The papers for the maple jet are just like any paper you would get for a regular press, same thickness and material the holes are just in different locations.

Thanks bcmhs800

I have a Buon Vino Super Jet and I might convert it. The Buon Vino filters already have DE in them. How many gallons does Maple Guys say you can filter between changing the filters on the Maple Jet?

Honestly i couldnt tell you, I've done a batch of about 6 gallons which included what i drained from my pan at the end of the season so it was quite dirty and had no problems. It would be worth a call to the maple guys and inquire some info on it and see what he says, and go from there.

Last year I purchase the Maple Jet from maple guys and had excellent results. I'd filter about 4-5 gallons at a time and the papers did not clog. The syrup was crystal clear as I bottle in glass. I purchase the papers from them as well as the DE. I would highly recommend it for the price it's worth it

So I bought this Maple Jet Filter Press to use this season and tried it for the first time this past weekend. We got frustrated because it was hard to pump the syrup through the press. I read from bcmhs800's post is that he fixed a half kinked hose on the press, is that the short hose that runs from the pump into the press plates?
I will post a picture soon if anyone is wondering.
Thanks

Yes it was the short hose that was kinked. Even if you try to straighten it as your pumping as it's set up now you will notice a difference. I used an elbow on mine an attached two short pieces of hose and it works great, you should be happy with the press!

I would like to know how it works out for you .I have been looking into these for syrup also. The Maple Guys have one that has 6 frames and will filter 2 gallons until the papers need to be changed. So I would say the papers on a 3 frame would be around 1 gallon? Buno Vino Super Jet filter has a 6 frame press for 50.00 less than the one from Maple Guys , but with a 165 deg. max temp, pump. You would have to get the filters for syrup from the MGuys too. which look identical in there pattern on the plates and holes in the filters. What Ive read the wine filters are to dense and not made to accept DE filter enhancment. You might try 180 deg hot water first with your pump just in case it can't handle it and comes apart. Hope it works out for you. Happy Sappin!

I know this is an old thread but nobody has replied. The Boun Vino wine press is the press that is being used. I got one for $175 used and added 1/4x20 threaded rod couplings to the rods that hold the plates. This allowed me to add 2 extra plates. I run 5 filter papers at a time. The pump and motor will need replaced as will the lines for the hot temperatures. I went to the local brew store and bought a stainless chugged pump with a run dry pump on it. Filter paper I bought from the maple guys. All total I have around $400 in and will tell you it works fantastic.keep your eyes open on Facebook market as they do come up on there. I’m very happy with mine plug it in and run works great

Hi everyone,
I have one of the Maple Guys Jet Presses, it is not the hand pump model its the electric motor model. Ive used it for 2 seasons now and last year did over 70 gallons with it. I will generally get about 8 gallons through it at a time before I change the papers. I am really happy with it. It does everything I need and does it quickly. I have a large 10 gallon brewery style pan that I heat my syrup up with over a propane burner. Once I hit 200 degrees I add my DE and start the pump cycling it back into the big pan until its running nice and clear, usually I will run it at least a minute or two. Then I shut it off and put my hose into my bottler and run the full pan through the press. It will empty the pan in less than 5 minutes and then I am on to my bottling steps. It really is a great little unit and I am glad I purchased it. I generally will only bottle 8-10 gallons at a time and for that amount it works great.

I also picked up the Wine Filter press and this will be my first season using it. I have a small operation only doing less than 20 gallons per year but filter is a big pain since we only do glass bottles. I picked this up on market place for less then $100. I checked with the manufacturer and the electric motor only works to 165' and I also watched the video maple guys put out and there electric motor is similar to that requirement from what I heard on the youtube video from them when it was released.

I have a few questions:

1. How much DE per run?
2. What hoses should be replaced on the machine?
3. Did you find a motor that would bolt in to replace the existing motor on the machine so it goes right back together?

Any more details from your experience would be great!

Thanks,

Craig

If they are the same sort of design as the Maple guys unit, I put about a cup and a half of DE into my 8-10 gallons of syrup and that works great.

Here is a Video of Chris from Maple Guys setting it up and using it.

I used the Buon Vino press this past yr. Filtered 80+ gallons. I didn't change anything other than adding extra plates. Think I was at 7 or 8 plates. First run I was able to get almost 12 gals thru but then it blew the line off the pump. What a mess. Watch the pressure gauge it'll climb slowly but then spike an blow the line off. Fittings on the first plate are tapered so it easily slides hose off. I would run a cup of DE to 4 gals of syrup. I have sold this press and upgraded to a full bank press.

I just picked up a Buon Vino Super Jet to experiment with. Questions:

1) Can you run a batch through (say 2 gallons) and then let the press sit a couple days and do another batch without changing the papers?
2) If yes, do you run water through it to clear the hoses and keep the pump from getting sticky?
3) If yes, I'm reading here that 1/2 cup of DE for 2 gallons is enough. Would I add more DE for the second batch or is the original DE stuck in the filters?
4) My plan is to use the included electric pump with 180* syrup. If it has trouble, does anyone know what model Guzzler hand pump to get?

I would not recommend leaving it assembled and trying to reuse the filters and DE. Flush with 185+ F hot water after you are done filtering and then disassemble and discard everything.

The DE needed should be based on how much it takes to fill the window plates, not the volume of syrup you plan to filter. You may adjust number of plates and hence DE based upon size of batch you intend to filter.

Figure out how much fills each plate when wet and compacted with syrup. Use that amount x number of plates you use.

Lastly, recirculate back into your pot where your syrup is mixed with DE for a while and then when it's looking crystal clear coming out of the press you can change to different bottling unit or direct to canning jars etc.

The Maple Jet Filter press does not have the window plates. It requires less DE because you are usually doing smaller batches with this filter press. I had one of these for several seasons and it worked good with the hand pump. Just follow the instructions that come with it. They also have a video of how to use it on their website.

I have converted the wine press over to what I think is close to the Maple Jet. I have a front plate, 3 middle plates, and a back plate, thus I'm using 4 filter papers. Is that similar to the Maple Jet?

I did a test with 170* water today. It leaked a ton of water out of the plates. I snugged up the handle and that was only a minor help. I easily had a couple ounces per pump drip out of the bottom. Is that expected with water only?

Thanks

That looks identical to a maple jet filter press. Syrup is a lot thicker than water. Even when you do syrup expect to have some seeping of syrup. You should be filtering the syrup at least at 185 to 190 degrees. AS I said earlier watch their video that will explain a lot more.

Anyone know where I can buy the filter papers? I've run the press now for at least 10 yrs and haven't had any problems with it, other than running out of papers. last time I was able to buy some I got them off E-bay.

You could always ask the Maple Guys they used to make a filter press and sell the papers.
