I'm buying some sap and I'm using the table put out in 2010. I need a bulk $ per pound. What are people using right now?

Thanks,
Sean

When i called Bascoms today they said 2.65 light and med, 2.55 dark, 2.50 b, 2.00 com and 1.50 unfilt ropey or buddy. That confuses me as in past buddy was com i thought

I was wondering what prices were doing with the season starting so late. Thanks for listing that. There's still feet of snow up north and there's no sign that we'll flip way above normal. In fact, it looks like temps will be pretty favorable up there this month. That should help keep prices pretty much where they are, if not a little lower but we'll see.

Commercial is very dark syrup with a very strong flavor, but with no or slight flavor defects. Ropey or buddy syrup is "substandard" syrup for reprocessing. They are definitely not the same thing, although frequently people lump them together.

Do you want sap prices? You mentioned buying sap, but want a by the pound price. Sap is bought and sold by the gallon.

Yes but it's based on the going bulk syrup/lb rate.

This sap price list was in the Feb. 2014 Maple Syrup Digest. It says it is based on the retail price of syrup.

Bascom prices this week are 2.60 light & med and 2.50 for dark. Seems the late season isn't leading to a price increase yet.

Sounds like prices have actually gone down 5¢ a pound since yesterday. I wonder what that reflects?

Ok, stupid question...if you're gonna break this down to how much per quart it equals roughly $7 quart right?

Price per qt? That depends on the grade.

For Medium, or $2.60 per pound, it would be 1 qt (3 lbs) * $2.60 = $7.80. For Grade B it would be 1Qt (3 LBS) * $2.50 - $7.50.

Anyone know if Bascom's prices are holding firm? How about the other packers?

Do you guys actually think that prices should rise?? It is looking like 60% - 75% crop being made, and with canada carrying over 60 million pounds, there is still plenty of syrup out there. There are pockets in the state that made close to a full crop.

The reason prices have softened a little probably has less to do with syrup supply and more to do with the U.S./Canadian Exchange monetary rate. The Canadian $ is worth about 10% less than it was a year ago, so syrup prices have fallen correspondingly.

If that is the reason equipment prices will also drop this year.

Not necessarily. The prices would not drop for any U.S. equipment manufacturers, except for equipment coming out of Canada perhaps. Even then, the price for steel and other parts and materials coming out of the U.S. is correspondingly higher for Canadian manufacturers, so things balance out that way. However the reality is that all the equipment manufacturers are barely managing to keep up with orders, thus there is no strong incentive to reduce prices.

I just wondering about all of the unfiltered "C" that ends up on the packers door. If the producer can't get it to filter, then how are the packers getting it to go through? They obviously have to get it through a filter at some point. Are they spreading it so thin with better commercial that they are able to filter it? Wondering if anyone knows the procedure?

Randy Brutkoski
05-02-2014, 05:55 PM
they have big presses that will filter it

brookledge
05-05-2014, 08:55 PM
There are some producers who don't even try to filter commercial syrup. Especially if you are not using a press. So they charge accordingly

if you bring in the bulk in 5gal or smaller containers, yes Bascoms deducts $.05 a lb.
