We started at 2.5, then up to 3. But last night we dropped to 2.75. I think we still have some frost in the ground and water can't get to the roots yet. We have all large yard trees so our sugar is higher then normal. Last year we ran between 3 and 3.5

In early March trees were around 2%. All the same trees I checked last night were around 1.5%.

yeah ive got about the same deal in westfield, it started at 1.2, went up to 3% at my highest for a few days now im back to 1.5% its supposed to taper of on sugar content as the season progresses but this year has been a all out mind challenge to what most of us know as sugaring season. good luck, and keep it pumpin till the buddy end!!

My red maples (98% of my operation) were averaging about 2.2%. My sugar maples were averaging about 2.7%.

i only test sugar content when im pumping out of my gathering tank to my head tank, to me that's where the over all sugar content matters the most, not just trees to tree when you do that math they taught in school that comes into play if your testing tree to tree ( mean, median, mode ) that's why i cut out the paperwork, to see directly where im at. because im using hydrometers still ( small cup) , no refractory meter yet .

I am running 2% today. I don't get ever get much higher then that during the season.

How do you test initial sugar content? Hydrometer?

Just tested my sap in tank with about 300 gallons and it tested 2.1 approx. I also tested some sap from my yard trees and they tested 2.5 -2.6 except one, a very large maple with a huge crown the 2 buckets on it had about 4 gallons and they tested over 5. That is the highest I have ever tested, and was going to test each tree individually until I broke my sap hydrometer while holding in my mouth !guess I will have to buy a new one, just got this one Saturday. I was pulling the lid closed on my tank and instead of setting it down I tried holding in my teeth, not a good idea.

mine have been @ 3% this year. ive allready pulled the taps on my reds and silvers...they bottomed out and turned yelow and the buds are popping...sugars still look good....i busted my sap hydrometer this morning as well..leaning on the counter and forgot it was in my shirt pocket and snapped it in half...luckly i keep a extra one hand.

I got a feeling this is the last week for us here as well.
Temps don't look good at all. :(
I lost count how many hydrometers I broke.lol

I tap all sugers. I usually start out around 3.3ish and down to around 2.5ish by end of season. On pace for the same this year.

We never had any sap test under 3.1% this year and were typically closer to 3.5%.

My first few loads tested 2.4-2.7% (about 8 loads on different days). Yesterday it tested 2%, all taps in sugars.
