I don't remember how many quarts it takes to fill it from empty but the oil level needs to see about a 1/2" or a little more up the sight tube.

Russ- I remember that too but I think theres gook in the bottom of the pump and I wonder if its giving me a false reading. That's why I was wondering if anyone knew and then that's how much Id put in. I put in a quart and it looks right on the sight gage but Im thinking its got to take more than that. Theron

Russ and Walnut- Thanks for the info. I put 2 quarts in it and its working good. Need to clean out the gunk in the bottom after season. Theron

According to the Surge book SP 22 oil capacity is 1.5 US quarts. Over filling puts stress on the crank shaft that can cause failure.
