Just wondering if anyone has had a decent run of sap in this area yet. I tried on March break, the temp was up to 4 on the Mon. and 7 on the Tuesday, but all I got was a dribble in some of the pails.( even though the temperature was good there was a cold wind blowing) Anytime that I have been up to Minden since, there has been poor weather. The forecast for the weekend and beyond is looking good, but I won't get excited till I see the pails filling up. Has anyone else had a good run or made any syrup yet?

20 trees currently tapped but not dripping, will tap about 50 if we get some good weather

I have had about 50 buckets out since the week before march break, and over the last 2 weeks got about 20 gallons of sap and 3 5 gallon buckets of ice chunks. Looking to boil this weekend though. I am ready.

I have 20 taps in. Just dribbles. It seems like all I am doing is tramping the trails down, considering the snow is 3 - 4 feet everywhere. But I am ready to go, hoping for something starting this weekend.

Hey there guys. I left my bush in Minden on Sunday afternoon with about 45 of 60 taps running at full tilt. I collected about 35 gallons, and stashed it in a snow bank. I cannot get back up there until Wed to collect. How was it running up there today. I am hopping for a big boil this weekend.

Thanks
Ralph

I use 4 gallon buckets on drop tubes. That way I have a little more wiggle room. My buckets are dug down in the snow to try to keep them cool. The only problem I have had this year is the number of snow flees (spring tails) that are around. They are getting into my pails.

I'm back, I made about 5.5litres between Sunday and Monday, the sap was running pretty good and the weather was great. The snow is still very deep, about 3 feet deep if I step off my trails. My syrup turned out well this year, in the past I have had problems finishing, as I'm not sure how accurate my thermometer is. I'm probably finished for this year, as I won't get back up for a couple of weeks.

I may get another run, but I won't be up for a couple of weeks, and may be busy with other things by then ( another big boil would be nice though) we'll see...

I got 50 taps in this weekend, and now I am panicking, because I am going away for march break. Looks Like I am due for a sick day later this week. Anyone have any updates for this area.

We are West of you in Parry Sound, awaiting the first run.
Trees were briefly dripping tonight at 9pm- weather looks promising for the next 5-7 days.
Good luck

I haven't started tapping yet, haven't even dug out the snow to get into the property. But am hopeing to start next week ( March Break), if the weather is still cooperating... looking forward to a good year.

Likewise- We pulled in 210 gallons from 304 taps in Parry Sound
Interestingly- we have 52 taps on 3/16 tubing- almost 90 gallons collected from the tubing alone.
That's about a 5:1 ratio in favour of the tubing.

Next year we will look for more trees on the hill and save the bucket leg work.
The deep snow is making collecting just brutal.

Well got back from a trip down south on sunday to find about 500 l of sap and about another 200 l of ice blocks. I am going to get my boil on!!!!!

Sitting in the palm trees last week, and under the maples this week. Mexico was sweet, but not as sweet as sap.

Just joined forum and this was my first year. Live about 40 minutes east of Peterborough. I made about 7 1/2 gallons of syrup this year from about 50 taps (all on buckets). Looking forward to next year

I made about 2 gallons off my 50 taps, mostly around the March Break, weather was hit and miss, and I missed a lot of sap since, but it all turned out good this year... already looking forward to next year as well...

I was up to Minden the weekend of mar 12 and 13. The weather was great, bright sunny warm days and cold nights. I made about 2.5 gallons of syrup. The next 5 days were rainy and cold, didn't get any more. If the weather is good on the Easter Weekend I'll try it again ...

Hey that is great. I have not tapped yet. Planning to do it Saturday. Hopping to do around 60 taps this year. Looks like the cold is coming back for the next couple of weeks so I might still have some time to get things organized. I spent last weekend digging the evaporator out, and tried to get through the wall of snow off the main road to my bush road. These thaws, snow falls, and then freeze cycles are making for a sore back, and an overworked snow blower. My ATV plow has been useless. I am in need of a tractor with a 5 foot blower. Looks like a lot of manual sap hauling to start the season.

Here is hoping we did not miss to much yet. Good luck for the season

Hey all, I'm resurrecting this old thread for another year? Has anyone in the area started tapping? I just tapped 20 trees in the miners bay area.

Hey there Electrorecycler are those taps you put in running? I worried I am missing a run. I will be putting my taps in over the next couple of weekends if the forecast looks good.

I will be putting my taps in over the next couple of weekends if the forecast looks good. They sure are! 19 taps produced about 20 gallons of sap yesterday. That's using a gravity system. I expect a good flow again today. So far I've collected about 75 gallons.

Alright finally heading up this weekend to tap as I am going to be away for March break. The long range is looking good right now. I hope I didn't miss too much of the season with these early runs. Might have to push my tap count up to 75 to maximize the rest of the season. I see some long Boils in my future.
