We had a bad incident last night. Yesterday we had filtered a bunch of syrup and cleaned everything up. Went outside to do other work. One of our small dogs sneaked in and found the used filter papers in a waste basket. He pulled a paper out and ate about 1/3 of a papers worth of DE and niter. By evening his stomach was bloated and hard as a rock. We made an emergency trip to the vet. They kept him, x-rayed and forced expulsion from both ends. He's finally back and OK. A nerve racking and expensive lesson. Next time a big can with lid.

Anyone else make a mistake like this?

Thanks for info Gary. Surprised to hear that since I know you can ingest small amounts. But not that much. In fact we dust our chicken feed once or twice a summer to clen them out. Hope your dog is ok.

No pets in my sugarhouse.my dog is named maple. She has her own spot on the couch in the sap house. Keeps me company on those long nights. Will drive my wife crazy if she is left in the house and knows I am down in the sap house.

while we are talking about being careful with D.E. a reminder for those just starting to use it. While it is inert and nontoxic it is a bad inhalation hazard. just be gentle and do not get it up in the air. super fine particulate size..man glad your dog is going to be okay!
