I was looking today at Craigs List and saw these Stainless Steel barrels.

For the price of flat pans, I think it may be worth it to cut a SS barrel in half, lengthwise and end up with two pans that are a pretty good size for the backyard sugarer. Around 23" x 35", size pan.

The round part of the barrel would be right into the heat and flames, the openings on top would have to have a fitting installed.

Anyone ever try this ? Think they could work as a round bottom flat pan?

Input is welcome.

Thanks

I think you'd end up with a lot of burnt sugar on the sides, just like I experienced with my restaurant pans down in the fire. The result is really dark syrup.

Good point.

Thanks for thinking of that.

Maybe have the hole smaller in the top of the arch so the whole "half barrel", does not fall all the way into the fire. Pretty sure the curved barrel would catch the sides. And, fire and smoke would probably leak out everywhere.

Never mind, lol, dumb thought. I need sap to run soon or I am going to lose it here. :o

Also your sap would be pretty deep. Bad for a good boil. Now some white lightning. . They would work great!
