we had a maple demo today at the nature center where I we were showing the different ways hollowed out log kettles and the evaporator i was telling someone about the vacuum system and they asked me if it hurt the tree i said did not think so as they monitor how much sap it taken out. the person said they did not think it was possible to do that. So my question is does it hurt the tree.
Thank you

No, it doesn't hurt the tree. Unlike animal cells, the trees have cell walls that are rigid and don't deform under vacuum.

The most harmful part of tapping is the tapping itself - the wound from the tapping depends on the spout size and how deep you drill. If you are using the same spout size and drill depth, the wound from vacuum will be the same as the wound from a bucket.
