Been wondering what the little mosquito-like flies are that show up in my collection jugs in increasing quantities as the weather gets warmer (a relative term, especially this year!). They look like this:

I've seen the various discussions of "snow fleas", but these are obviously not those! Turns out they are "Winter Crane Flies" (Trichocera annulata). Easily strained out during sap collection and, unlike their blood-sucking cousins soon to be plaguing us, they don't bite!
