Great idea! I am going to make one myself for sure after seeing this. Where is the flat copper from? I have lots of large copper pipe scraps laying around but no flat stock at all.

Make sure you get it hot several times and read the hydrometer as soon as possible, copper will give up the heat faster that SS. Maybe get a length of foam pipe insulation. Then it would be even better than SS in heat transfer.

I believe I'll have to make one as well. The one I ordered this year is to tall for my hydrometer. Did you flatten a length of 3/8 for your handle?

Depending on your copper pipe size you could cut a piece then cut the length and flatten it out. Might not be perfect but willing to bet you could get it looking pretty good.

I made a copper cup a few years ago. I made mine from an one inch expansion chamber, that way I already had a bottom. We soldered a brass base on it, because it was easier to find flat brass. I flattened a piece of 3/8 tubing for the handle. Last year my base came off, so I need to re solder it. Here is a link to one like it. I like it as the copper heats up faster than stainless and I feel it holds heat well. I fill it a time or two to warm it when hot testing. I have found if you hang it on the evaporator inside of the pan it stays pretty hot.
