Anyone running a gast 1550 with a gas engine? I just picked up a 1550, and ordered a 6.5 hp gas engine and am looking for guidance with the pullys, what size to put where. Thanks in advance.

direct mount with a coupling is the way to go. No pulleys no belts. I am putting one together as a back up pump and am using a 5 hp Honda motor off from a pressure washer. I had the pressure washer and the pump was bad. If it doesn't work out as for maple might set it up for a portable milking machine.

I run one with a gas engine i dont think that you will need that big of a engine.I use a small habor freight motor i picked up brand new for 100 bucks.

i'm running one next year with the cheapest engine harbor freight has and going to run it off a real small belt. might have to run it slow, the engine may turn too fast for the pump. i think the correct rpm is in the 650-900 range, while your average gas engine runs 2000-2500 rpms.

I believe the number of rpm to shoot for is about 1725,I have a couple 1550 but I have not used them yet, they will get hooked up next season when I can afford another releaser

You only need a 79cc predator engine(harbor freight $100) to run that pump. It probably wont work with a coupler because of the direction of rotation and it only can run at 1/2 the speed of the engine. Check the rotation arrow on the pump. Some models apparently do spin the other way. If you overspeed it too much for too long you'll snap the vanes. I'm speaking from experience. I ran an even bigger pump(2065) on the same motor with no problem at all. I reduced the rpms by 1/2 by using a pulley that was twice the size of the engine. A good ratio is 2.5" to 5" or 3" to 6". You should'nt get any slippage with that. They run at about 3500 rpm wide open and sip gas. Perfect match.

my bad, you are correct on the rpm's. i think i had my surge in mind... 19 years old and i cant remember a thing :o

You are right so I took my pump apart and was able to turn the shaft around to the opposite side. This pump is pretty simple inside I am also going to reset the speed of the governor on the motor and check the speed on the pump. I am only using this motor because I have it available. I also have 3 more sets of veins and bearings to allow for this experiment. The motor is a 5hp Honda that sits on a pressure washer cart. .

yup they do turn different directioins so I guess I cant use a coupler. The idle rpm of my engine says 1800 +- 50rpm so hopefully be able to just get the same size pully for both and be in the ball park? I hope anyway....

Well that was a disaster, the pump must have been put together wrong at some point, I went by the rotation arrow on the top and the pump ran for 20 min, then the pump seized up!!! Talk about bad timing!!! When I got ready to take it apart I noticed that the arrows on the side covers were going the other way... My question is did someone do this intentionally to change the opereting direction?

Do you need replacement parts. Just give me a call 603 823 7708. I have bearings and veins for that pump.

I blew one of those last year. They're real easy to work on and chances are the only damage is to the vanes. Turns out my vanes were getting weak anyhow.

Once you get your pump back together if you want a more exact speed on the engine and your pump you can pick up a small tachometer for the engine. I put one on a setup that I, did most Yamaha ATV dealers have them it is about the size of a pocket watch and has a little wire you just wrap around the spark plug lead. Yamaha sells them as an Hourmeter to tell the user when service is due I think it was about $30.
