View Full Version : Anyone have source for temp probe adapter for threaded ports on evaporator pans?

I recently became a sugarmaker... fortunately with minimal damage, but I'm now looking for a temperature probe with alarm.

I've been using one of the Thermoworks digital probes - I picked it up at Verona and it came with a type of compression adapter for the evaporator pan - I have a Mason pan and same adapter fits his finishers as well. I'm not 100% sure what the specification is on the compression adapter to take the thermometer probe, and they don't seem to be normally sold with them.

Can anyone clarify what type of adapter is required and a source if you have one?

Thanks,
Colin

Your best bet is to contact Bill Mason. He is a member here and you can send him a PM, or give him a call.

I believe he just supplies the dial type and I got the thermometer from someplace at the Verona show. What I'm looking for is something to adapt the cooking probes to the 1/4" NPT ports that are typical to his, Leader, and I believe most any evaporator.

Looking around, I think a regular tube compression fitting would work as long as the probe matches a standard tube O.D.

I think this may be what my thermometer came with as it's actually plastic:

FDA approved and rated for 275 F.

Now to find a probe with OD that matches standard tubing sizes...

Can you find a compression type fitting of the correct or slightly larger size for your probe? You can substitute an O ring for the ferrule, picking smaller or bigger, thicker or thinner, so that the nut compresses the O ring. Even if the body and the nut of the fitting is too small, you can drill that out, within reason, to allow the probe to pass thru. Auto parts stores have these fittings. Many large semis have these fittings on the gear shift, know any truck mechanics?

I've no idea if it's what you're looking for but I went to Brew Hardware http://brewhardware.com/measurement-devices/thermometers-71 for a digital thermometer with an NPT fitting that I installed in my 2X3 Phaneuf

Awesome - brew hardware has exactly what I was looking for and it looks like they use an o-ring as suggested above.

The oven thermometers have so many great options like high alarm for the evaporator, and high/low alarm for bottling that I wish I had done this a year ago!

Thanks!

I don't advise using the recommended Vaseline on the o-rings. :)

I used veggie oil...I've not gotten any leaks so far.
